Senior Server Hardware Engineer

We are looking for a Senior Server Hardware Engineer to help build the fast-growing foundation to Ericsson’s emerging compute platform by selecting, managing and coordinating the servers that underlay UDN’s public cloud.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Work with requirements supplied by UDN engineering to define server make/model and quantities with the most appropriate parts (memory, disks, NICs, CPUs, etc) for the given application.
  • Coordinate with multiple groups to ensure soft requirements are met (business requirements, logistics, supportability, etc)
  • Coordinate the full release cycle of new hardware from competitive bids, to lab evaluation, testing in QA to planning staged hardware upgrades in production.
  • Fully manage vendor relationships including quotes, purchase orders as well as support agreements, support workflows and contracts.
  • Maintain an active inventory of server hardware in an asset database.
  • Track server capex and depreciation costs which provide data to multiple teams to define financial models for the service.
  • Track server end-of-life schedules as well as warranty sunsets and coordinate with all teams on the refresh cycle.
  • Define server maintenance and support procedures/runbooks for the NOC.
  • Help the NOC escalate broken hardware they are unable to self-solve with vendor(s) using normal procedures/runbooks.
  • Track vendor notices and work with operations team to update BIOS, firmware, IMPI, etc (as appropriate).
  • Maintain a server lab and coordinate engineering’s use of the lab.
  • Facilitate the procurement of new hardware for engineering to evaluate in the lab.


  • Experience with enterprise-level server hardware (HP ProLiant, Dell PowerEdge, SuperMicro SuperServer, etc).
  • The ability to quickly scope the feasibility of hardware choices (ex: cost, IO bandwidth, network load, CPU capacity, etc) preferred.
  • Experience in a large-scale SaaS/IaaS environment preferred.
  • Experience in Linux and OpenStack preferred.
  • General networking knowledge preferred.
  • Experience in CDNs is a plus
  • Must be able to multitask, manage priorities and drive projects to completion.
  • Strong organization, documentation and communications skills preferred.
  • A sense of ownership and and a drive for continual improvement.
  • Bachelor of Science in an IT-related field or significant industry experience.
