Principal Orchestration Engineer

Overview:

We are looking to hire a core engineering team member to drive the development and innovation of our cloud management platform and compute platform. We run Kubernetes clusters globally on top of a global network and a private and public cloud hybrid hardware platform. Developing the software that makes seamless deployment and management of applications as tenants in this dynamic environment would be the responsibility of the person in this role. We automate all of our deployment and system management and the successful candidate would have considerable experience developing with SaltStack, Ansible, Chef and the like as well as Python; would have worked in global environments with high uptime requirements; would bring deep experience with complex networks; and would have experience in cloud and private cloud platforms.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Automate the deployment, management, monitoring, and provisioning of numerous software components and systems
  • Provide technical leadership and communicate and socialize designs
  • ​Knowledge of Kubernetes and OpenStack networking including a deep understanding of various network overlay and network partitioning and virtualization approaches.
  • Ensure that systems are highly-available, maintainable, scalable, and able to be effectively managed by Operations.
  • Engineer tenant isolation into this environment that is built with multiple levels of virtualization and abstraction
  • Build platforms that minimize performance impact on hosted applications while providing flexibility in compute, storage, and networking
  • Provide on-call support along with Operations and other members of the development team to ensure that our systems are performing as expected
  • Adopt tools judiciously and recommend best practices for managing our systems.
  • Understand how to manage systems built on micro-service architectures in an elastic, cloud environment.
  • Research new technologies, including hands-on technical evaluation and POCs.
  • Create and maintain documentation.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Deep experience in a Linux environment
  • 5+ years of experience in cloud networking and compute environments
  • 10+ years of experience in developing, architecting, deploying highly scalable distributed computer systems
  • At least a year of deploying and managing Kubernetes environments with multiple tenant applications
  • Experience with OpenStack deployment and configuration
  • Understanding of and experience working with complex network topologies
  • Experience working in an environment where systems are cloud-based, elastically scaled, managed through automation, and designed to deal with failure
  • Experience with OpenStack, Docker, and Kubernetes
  • Programming experience in at least the Unix shell and Python
  • Ability to work across teams to understand how systems function as well as the real-world operations and management use cases related to running these systems
  • Evidence of innovation and thought leadership in past engagements and/or in open source communities, blogs, open source projects, etc.
  • Experience managing cloud platforms
  • Experience working in teams and managing to tasks in an Agile environment
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Computer Science, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English
